Laser Stretch Mark Therapy And Removal – Effectiveness and Procedure

Rapid weight gain, puberty, and pregnancy result in stretch marks or striae.  Different methods are known in removing these scars, but one the most effective methods is laser stretch mark therapy.

What Happens During Laser Stretch Mark Therapy?

Thin layers of skin around the stretch marks are moved by a beam of light.  The excimer laser uses high-energy ultraviolet laser light to disrupt skin tissue molecular bonds which results to ablation or disintegration of tissues that stimulates synthesis of collagen.  The laser beams release heat and wavelength that invigorates a specific portion of the damaged tissue which results in replacement of new skin. After completion of treatment, the treated skin area will heal quickly and new layers of healthy skin will form.  A renewed, healthy appearance will result after the disappearance of stretch marks.  One session of laser therapy removal extends for about an hour which is dependent on the color of the skin and the extent to which tissue is damaged during stretch mark formation.

The affected area after laser stretch mark removal will be red and tender.  Layers of scarred skin have been removed and occasional blisters and burn injury symptoms may be present.  It takes a few days to heal from the treatment but some require more than a few weeks with those who underwent extensive therapy.

Is Laser Stretch Mark Therapy Effective?

It has been reported that laser stretch mark therapy is effective in reducing approximately 30 to 40% in moderate to severe cases of stretch marks.  The following lists down the advantages of laser therapy:

  1. USFDA Approved.   Laser Stretch Mark Removal and its products are USFDA approved as being safe and effective with minor side effects that usually disappear.
  2. Elastin and Collagen Fiber Induction. The formation of elastin and collagen fibers in the affected area is induced by laser therapy treatment.  These two proteins are essential as their function is the repair and growth of damaged skin.  The lost elasticity of the skin is regained by undergoing the laser stretch mark removal therapy.
  3. Effective with immature scarring.  This method is effective in removing both old stretch marks and immature scarring.  Slightly inflamed and reddish in appearance characterize immature marks.  Early treatment of immature marks prevents them from deepening.
  4. Can be performed at home. With numerous hand-held laser cosmetic devices that are sold in the market, laser stretch mark removal can be done within the privacy of one’s home.  Customers can follow the easy-to-use instruction manual that is provided with these devices.  However, it is still recommended that this procedure is done under the supervision of a certified and experienced cosmetic surgeon for safe and best results.

Laser stretch mark treatment might have many advantages, but it still has its limitations like any other medical procedure.  This clinical procedure is expensive and requires the patient to undergo 5-6 sessions before positive results appear.  Scars can be effectively removed when they are in dark red and purple color.  Use of specialized creams and/or microdermabrasion is needed for promotion of new cell growth.
